Airline unveils Valentine's Day contest exclusively for its Twitter followers

CALGARY, Feb. 11 /CNW/ - WestJet today announced it will give away a trip for two to Bermuda in a new Valentine's Day contest exclusively for people who follow the airline on Twitter.

"We've been overwhelmed by the response of social media users to what we've been doing on Twitter and Facebook," said Richard Bartrem, WestJet Vice-President, Communications, Creative Services and Community Relations. "There's a great buzz out there right now, and this contest is a way of thanking the 12,000 or so people who follow us on Twitter."

To be eligible to win, contest entrants must have a Twitter account, follow WestJet and Tweet a declaration of love for someone or something - in no more than 140 characters, of course!

New followers must sign up to follow WestJet before midnight mountain time on Valentine's Day, Sunday, February 14, 2010. Existing followers are also eligible to win. A random draw to determine the winner will be made on Monday, February 15, 2010, from all WestJet Twitter followers who enter the contest.

This is the second contest WestJet has run exclusively for Twitter followers. Last October, the airline gave away return airfare for two in a Thanksgiving contest by asking followers to Tweet what they were thankful for. WestJet Twitter followers also got the first look at the WestJet Care-antee aircraft, a brand new, custom-painted Boeing Next Generation 737-800, when the airline broadcast the unveiling of the aircraft via live streaming video on February 5, 2010.

"Social media has become a very important communication channel for WestJet," Richard Bartrem said. "It gives us the opportunity to enhance the guest experience by interacting with our guests in a new, interactive and exciting way."
