WestJet announces Japan Airlines code-share agreement

Airline adds its fourth code-share partner as part of ongoing growth strategy

CALGARY, Dec. 14, 2011 /CNW/ - WestJet today announced that it has signed a code-share agreement with Japan Airlines (JAL) to begin accepting connecting guests on WestJet flights on December 15, 2011.

Under the code-share agreement, which will allow Japan Airline's guests to travel seamlessly into WestJet's network, Japan Airlines will place its "JL" flight indicator on WestJet-operated flights between Vancouver and six Canadian cities: Calgary, Edmonton, Kelowna, Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg. Ticket sales begin today.

"We are very pleased to announce our partnership with JAL, a high-quality, world-class airline," said John MacLeod, WestJet Vice-President, Network Management and Alliances. "This agreement represents another key step in our strategy to welcome on board new guests from around the world."

In addition to Japan Airlines, WestJet now has code-share agreements with Cathay Pacific, KLM and American Airlines. WestJet also has interline agreements with 17 airlines around the world.

Interline agreements allow guests to book flights with multiple airlines using a single ticket and facilitate the transfer of baggage to a final destination. Code-share agreements allow our airline partners to sell seats on WestJet flights under their own flight numbers, which facilitates a more seamless guest experience and may offer additional benefits.
