WestJet to launch service from Northern Ontario's largest city
CALGARY, Nov. 1, 2016 /CNW/ - WestJet announced today it will begin daily service between the Greater Sudbury Airport and Toronto Pearson International Airport starting February 3, 2017. Operated by WestJet's regional airline, WestJet Encore, the service will increase to three daily flights in May 2017.
"WestJet is enriching lives and liberating Canadians coast to coast from the high cost of air travel," said Bob Cummings, WestJet Executive Vice-President, Commercial. "As Canada's low-fare leader, we are offering residents of Greater Sudbury the opportunity to fly more affordably and connect seamlessly into our expanding national and international network. With as many as 115 daily departures available via Toronto Pearson – more than at any other airport in our network – these flights perfectly match the needs of both business and leisure travellers. Combined with the extended reach of our more than 40 airline partners around the world, getting around just got a whole lot easier for northerners."
"I am delighted that WestJet has chosen to expand their world-class service to Nickel Belt and Greater Sudbury through their regional airline, WestJet Encore," said Marc Serré, Member of Parliament, Nickel Belt. "Now, residents of Nickel Belt and Greater Sudbury will have more travel options than ever before! Having a strong transportation sector is critically important to our local economy for both business and pleasure travellers alike. WestJet Encore's new relationship with Greater Sudbury Airport will undoubtedly bring positive economic benefits to the region. I congratulate WestJet on expanding its flight service to Northern Ontario, and Greater Sudbury Airport officials on advocating for this expansion for the betterment of our community."
"WestJet's decision to offer flights in Sudbury will boost economic activity, create jobs, and provide consumers with new, affordable choices," said the Honourable Glenn Thibeault, Member of Provincial Parliament for Sudbury and Minister of Energy for the Province of Ontario. "Sudbury is a dynamic community – with many people coming and going for work or for leisure – and I know these new options will make things a bit better for everyone."
"The City of Greater Sudbury would like to welcome WestJet to our community," said Mayor Brian Bigger. "This new partnership provides more choice for Sudburians, improves the tourism industry, brings more visitors to Greater Sudbury, creates jobs and spin off positions for our community and continues to reinforce our position as the hub of Northern Ontario."
