WestJetters and IKON employees plant 570 trees in City of Calgary park
CALGARY, July 9 /CNW/ - WestJet and IKON will plant 570 trees in a Calgary park today, estimated to offset all of WestJet's expected Calgary Campus paper use for 2009. The WestJet-IKON tree plant will occur at Carburn Park in Calgary's southeast and approximately 30 WestJetters and 30 IKON employees will plant trees donated by the City of Calgary.
"As Canada's preferred airline, WestJet is committed to the environment and our WestJetters are demonstrating that today with the WestJet-IKON tree plant," said Richard Bartrem, WestJet Vice-President Culture and Communications. "With partners like IKON, WestJet continues on the path toward gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for our new Calgary Campus.
"This is a great opportunity for us all to make a difference to the community and to the environment. IKON, a Ricoh Company, is very excited to partner with WestJet and the City of Calgary in reducing our carbon footprint as a team," said Kara Leckman, IKON Calgary Sales Manager. "This is the fifth consecutive year that Ricoh has been listed in the "Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World," known as the "Global 100". IKON and WestJet are focused on making this an annual event."
The trees and location for the WestJet-IKON tree plant were provided by The City of Calgary as part of their Adopt-a-Park program.
"We are always grateful for the support of local businesses, like WestJet and IKON, that help us to meet our goal of a sustainable and increasing urban forest in Calgary," said Anne Charlton, Director for The City of Calgary Parks. "Through partnerships like this, we are working together to preserve and protect our natural environment, and encouraging our employees, and ultimately all Calgarians, to become environmental stewards."
The WestJet-IKON tree plant will begin at 12:45 p.m. at Carburn Park (8925 Riverview Drive SE, picnic site No. 1), with a short presentation followed by a 15-minute walk to the tree-planting site and then the tree planting. Local media are invited.
